Overview of rainforest protection organizations in DACH
This list shows an expanded selection of active organizations from Switzerland, Austria and Germany.
OroVerde - The Tropical Forest Foundation
The rainforest protection projects in Guatemala, Honduras, Cuba and Indonesia are planned holistically and are implemented with the local population. People in Germany are made aware of tropical environmental protection through educational projects at schools and through targeted information campaigns for consumers.
Zoologische Gesellschaft Frankfurt (ZGF)
The Frankfurt Zoological Society is an international conservation organization with projects in 18 countries, including Colombia, Peru, Guyana and Brazil. The goal is to preserve wild animals and wilderness, especially around and in national parks. The rainforest projects are carried out with national nature conservation authorities, national park administrations and other NGOs, with local partners receiving practical, unbureaucratic and long-term support.
Stiftung AMAZONICA Deutschland
In the deep rainforest of Ecuador, indigenous communities are actively supported to better protect their natural environment from deforestation. The focus is on the commitment to indigenous (land) rights, the health of the peoples and the education of the new generation. This is primarily implemented within the framework of the AMAZONICA Academy for indigenous and international students.
NABU International
Naturschutzverein Lebensraum Regenwald e.V.
Through projects in Latin America and Asia, the rainforest is being preserved as a habitat for biodiversity, with the local population being integrated into the process as the main actors. The work aims to protect the rainforest from deforestation and preserve it as a climate stabilizer. Targeted reforestation measures create new living space and at the same time offer locals an alternative source of income.
Selva Viva (fünf Organisationen)
The Selva Viva rainforest protection project is active in the Ecuadorian Amazon and is made up of five complementary activities or sub-organizations:
-
The rainforest Selva Viva
-
The wild animal sanctuary amaZOOnico
-
The Runa Wasi tourist accommodation of the local Indian community
-
The Sacha Yachana Wasi Christina school
-
The eco-hotel Liana Lodge
Yanomami-Hilfe e.V.
The non-profit association supports indigenous peoples in South America, especially the Yanomami Indians in Brazil and Venezuela. Since the breathtaking raft trip across the Atlantic in 1992 to promote indigenous rights, three health clinics and other helpful activities have been organized for the threatened indigenous communities.
Kinderregenwald Deutschland e.V.
The association is committed to the preservation and regeneration of tropical habitats. The aim is to raise local people's awareness of their flora and fauna through environmental education.
The funding areas are in Costa Rica and Ecuador and are known internationally under the translated names “Eternal Forest of Children” and “International Bridge of Children”.
fans for nature e.V.
The non-profit association's commitment began in Borneo in 1995 and has since been dedicated to protecting the Indonesian rainforest in general and the orangutan in particular. By working with the C.O.P. (Centre for Orangutan Protection) sponsorships can be arranged for orphaned or confiscated orangutans.
Panguana
The Panguana Foundation looks after its own Research station and the associated nature reserve in the Amazon rainforest in Peru. The company specializes in researching and protecting biological diversity and ecosystems in this region. The protected area is to be continuously expanded and the study area enlarged by purchasing additional rainforest areas.
Wilderness International
Wilderness International is the merger of three sister foundations in Germany, Canada and Peru. Together, the team is dedicated to the legally secure purchase of wilderness areas and forests around the world. In addition to wilderness protection, the international team is also committed to environmental education.
Ecovida
The Ecovida Foundation, based in St. Gallen, Switzerland, is active in Costa Rica. The commitment is primarily aimed at the Lapa Verde nature reserve, which was officially recognized by Costa Rica in 2013. Ecovida strives to preserve and restore the diverse habitat, protect endangered animal species, sustainably prevent poaching and deforestation, and raise awareness among the local population for the common cause. Through collaboration with research and conservation programs, a new species of reptile was discovered in Lapa Verde in the summer of 2023: a green parrot snake (Leptophis nebulosus).
More than a Tree
More than a Tree, as the name suggests, is about more than just reforestation. The international team based near Stuttgart, Germany, is active in Indonesia. The mission behind the projects is to create self-managed eco communities. As first initiated on the island of Sumbawa, the team focuses on ecologically sustainable agroforestry, agriculture and permaculture. This is intended to create synergies between environmental protection and socio-economic developments.
Pro Regenwald e.V.
Information, education, network and projects - the Pro Regenwald association offers an extensive platform on the subject of rainforest protection. As an environmental and human rights organization, Pro REGENWALD works internationally with many partners against the further destruction of forests and for restoration. The activities are intended to lead to future-oriented awareness and behavior in general and to the enforcement of the rights of indigenous and traditional societies to self-determination over their future, territories and resources. Here you can also find news about international events and event announcements.
Urgewald e.V.
Since its founding in 1992, the organization for climate protection and human rights has made the path of destructive “dirty” money visible, thereby making it uncomfortable for the donors in the background. Because if you cut off the money from the “climate killers”, climate protection has a better chance. One of the successes in 2022 was the disclosure of the ExitArms database. It lists around 500 companies that are involved in arms exports to warring parties. Also worth mentioning is the pressure on the insurer Allianz, which announced that it will no longer insure new oil and gas fields or new oil power plants and other things from January 2023.
Rhino and Forest Fund e.V.
The team protects the rainforests of Borneo in Malaysia and the goal is to connect isolated forest fragments into larger protected areas using wildlife corridors. In order to preserve and protect endangered forest areas, private plantations between the protected areas are acquired in order to be able to reforest them. This means that endangered animal species have a much higher chance of survival.
